The module consists of concepts, theories and principles for designing structural elements such as foundations, columns, beams and walls. Students will develop skills in analyzing structural systems, determine forces, and design structural elements, using the standard codes of practice.

This module expands on the principles of structural design and the theoretical analysis of structures introduced in Structural Mechanics.  While it extends the understanding, and use of the concepts of mechanics it forms the basis for understanding more advanced structural analysis and design phenomena both in theory and practice.

This modules deals with the application of structural mechanics qualitative analysis of structures, appropriate methods of structural analysis, matrix, stiffness and flexibility methods of structural analysis, matrix, stiffness and flexibility methods of structural analysis.  Influence lines for statically determinate structures.

This module will focus on the design principles and methods involved in the design of the major individual concrete and steel members for normal gravity loadings. The transfer or distribution of these loads from one member to an adjoining member as well as the inter-connection of these members and how they work together to form a structural system will also be considered.

Working knowledge of the principles involved in Design and Detailing of structures is essential to Construction Engineering. This is so even if the individual operates as an implementer and not a designer.  In Construction Engineering the major building materials are Reinforced Concrete and Structural Steel. In this module, we will focus on the design principles and methods involved in the design of the major individual steel members for normal gravity loadings. The transfer or distribution of these loads from one member to an adjoining member as well as the interconnection of these members and how they work together to form a structural system will also be considered.   The detailing and presentation of these designs for implementation is also a requirement of this module.

The module will further examine and evaluate the application AND methods to analyse statically indeterminate structures.

This module requires a working knowledge of the principles involved in Design and Detailing. This module will focus on the design principles and methods involved in the design of structural members made of reinforced concrete, steel, masonry blocks, timber and stone. We will also introduce the methods of analysis and design of members that are subject to Wind and Earthquake loads.
